THE LIVESTOCK REVOLUTION:
A Pathway from Poverty?

Theatrette, New Parliament House, Canberra
Wednesday, 13 August 2003

More Information and Media Releases:

Each year the Fund's conference highlights an important aspect of feeding and greening the world and we believe that this year's event will be another in our series of highly successful, well attended and nationally reported conferences.

A quiet revolution is taking place in global agriculture. Driven by increasing incomes and urbanisation in developing countries, the demand for livestock products (meat, eggs and dairy products) for human consumption is increasing at a far greater rate than the demand for staple crops.

Because the poor derive a greater proportion of their income from livestock than do the wealthy, and because of the huge expected growth in demand for livestock products, the livestock revolution could become a key means of alleviating poverty in the next 20 years, and will certainly change global rural trade in livestock and grain.

The theme this year will inform and generate debate on the value of livestock to small holder farmers in developing countries, the concerns that surround livestock production and the trade and marketing of livestock products, and including the challenges of fee 7 June, 2005 isease problems and managing the environmental and animal welfare issues.

This year's conference is dedicated as a tribute to Professor Derek Tribe, The ATSE Crawford Fund's founding Executive Director, who passed away this year. Derek was the impetus behind the establishment of the highly innovative International Livestock Centre for Africa in the early 1970s (now the International Livestock Research Institute - ILRI).

Keynote Speaker:

Dr Carlos Seré, Director General, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

Carlos Seré a citizen of Uruguay, has a doctorate in agricultural economics from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. Immediately before joining ILRI (www.ilri.org) he worked for 7 years for the Latin America and Caribbean office of the International Development Research Centre (Canada), first managing a portfolio of agricultural and natural resource management projects and, from 1996, serving as a regional director.

From 1990 to 1994 he was an independent consultant, reviewing research and development activities such as the dairy sector in Ecuadorean Sierra, farmer development in Uruguay, soil conservation in eastern Paraguay and global livestock production systems for a major study of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Dr Seré's expertise is broad, including tropical livestock production systems, foot-and-mouth disease, smallholder dairy farming, tropical pastures and quantification of the costs and benefits of research. He has served the Consultative Group on Internatinal Agriculture (CGIAR) as both staff member and reviewer.

From 1980 to 1990 he was an economist with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, in Colombia. In 1992 and 1994, respectively, he reviewed the programme and management of the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases (one of ILRI's two predecessors, based in Kenya) and the International Potato Center, in Peru. He served on the team that developed a strategic plan for a new CGIAR global livestock research institution -ILRI - which began operations in January 1995.
