FISH, AQUACULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY:
Sustaining Fish as a Food Supply

Theatrette, New Parliament House, Canberra
Wednesday, 11 August 2004

The Crawford Fund's annual conferences highlight an important aspect of feeding and greening the world and this year's event was another in our series of thought provoking, well attended and nationally reported events.

Many of the solutions for increasing food security and alleviating poverty using marine and freshwater systems have yet to be found.

Balancing competing demands and managing threats to the continuity of supplies also requires research, negotiation and determined action.

This year's Crawford Fund annual conference was the first time that our annual conference has emphasised marine resources.

It involved discussion from international and national experts on the state of the world's wild fisheries, the need to sustain marine and other aquatic environments for fish, and the importance of supplying fish for human consumption.

The tremendous potential for aquaculture (fish farming) to meet the growing demand for fish for food and wealth creation needs to be balanced against the environmental degradation and pollution concerns associated with that industry, and these too will be considered.

Other topics related to fish diseases and market access and trade issues.

The event explored these issues and the required action if we are to maintain supplies of fish for human consumption, for the acquaculture industry, for the environment and for pleasure into the future.
