"Fish, Aquaculture and Food Security: Sustaining Fish as a Food Supply", is an international conference in Parliament House, Canberra on 11 August exploring the issues and the required action to maintain supplies of fish for human consumption, for the aquaculture industry, for the environment and for pleasure.

9.00am   Opening by The Hon Alexander Downer, Minister for Foreign Affairs

1.25pm   Address by Sen The Hon Ian Macdonald, Minister for Fisheries on the issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

A press conference will be held at 10.30am with:

  • Dr Sylvia Earle, Time magazine's 'Hero of the Planet' and world-renowned oceanographer addressing the state of the world's wild fisheries and their protection;
  • Dr Meryl Williams, Chair, FAO Advisory Committee on Fisheries Research and former head, WorldFish Center, offering solutions to the problems with the rising tide of fish demand;
  • Dr Mahfuzuddin Ahmed, President of the International Institute for Fisheries Economics and Trade, who will address sustainability issues;
