Andrew Egan

Assistant Secretary, Climate Change and Sustainability Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Andrew Egan leads the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Branch with responsibility for driving climate action across Australia’s development cooperation program. The Branch supports efforts to strengthen climate resilience in the Indo-Pacific region, including by addressing food and water insecurity challenges. The Branch also leads on approaches to engage the private sector on climate action and Australia’s broader development effort, including through innovative financing approaches.

Most recently, Andrew served for three years in Australia’s High Commission in Port Moresby. He was a member of the High Commission’s senior management team, leading work on Governance, Law and Justice; Education; Gender Subnational Development; Bougainville; and Kokoda.

Before moving to PNG, Andrew led DFAT’s Humanitarian Response, Risk and Recovery Branch. He was a founding member of DFAT’s innovationXchange and led the Department’s Governance Branch and Strategic Planning Branch. Andrew has also served overseas for four years in the Philippines (2009 – 2013).

Prior to joining DFAT in 2006, Andrew was based in the United States working with the international NGO, Human Rights Watch. He holds a Masters degree from Princeton University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a Bachelor of Science/Law from Monash University.
