Associate Professor Stephen Ives

Associate Professor Stephen Ives

Chair, Tasmanian Crawford Committee

Stephen has had a different pathway into Agriculture. He worked as a general farmhand for several years after leaving school and then had 18 gap years working as a design draftsman in the construction and agricultural industries, before completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. He then worked as a consultant vegetable and cereal agronomist for 10 years, during which he completed a PhD, and afterwards moved to Vietnam with his family for 12 months to coordinate a livestock research project funded through ACIAR. Returning to Tasmania, Stephen continued his local and international research in soils, crops, and livestock with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture at the University of Tasmania. Since 2017, Stephen has incorporated undergraduate teaching with his research, providing pathways for young people to be involved in international agricultural research particularly with the support of the Crawford Fund.
