Recent media reports around biosecurity have covered an exotic beetle incursion from China, the likely track for the blow-in of pests from New Zealand to Tassie, discussion of whether biosecurity should be under the agriculture or immigration departments, and new measures to stop activists trespassing on farms. It’s obviously an area with varied interesting developments.

But there is important, ongoing work in our region, rather than events at home, that has arguably equally important impacts for Australian farmers, our economy, scientists and biosecurity research and policy.

As part of our ongoing effort to raise awareness of the benefits to Australia from aid-funded international agricultural research after the launch of our “Doing Well by Doing Good” Report, join us for a discussion of biosecurity issues with representatives of key bodies in efforts at home and internationally:

  • Dr Tony Gregson is a farmer in the Wimmera, Chair of Crawford Fund Victorian Committee and of Plant Health Australia, with an extensive science and corporate research management background.
  • Dr Nick Austin is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, which funds significant biosecurity research and projects in our region.
  • Dr Peter Daniels, Deputy Director at CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory.
