The Crawford Fund for Food Security, in collaboration with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) recently delivered its 9th Master Class in Agricultural Research Leadership and Management in Penang, Malaysia.

“This series of leadership and management focused Master Classes aims to foster the development and confidence in the skills required to manage and lead successful research and development projects that support the needs of developing countries and global food security,” said Shaun Coffey, Chief Executive Officer, the Crawford Fund for Food Security.

The Master Class included 25 participants from countries including Australia, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Uganda and from organisations including the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics, International Water Management Institute, International Rice Research Institute, The Pacific Community, James Cook University and the University of Southern Queensland.

“The five-and-a-half-day program was designed to cover a variety of topics relevant to leadership and management of agricultural research. The participants engaged in an immersive and intensive program designed to equip them with the skills, strategies, and vision necessary to drive impactful change,” said Mr Coffey.

“Feedback from the Master Class participants described the course as highly engaging, well structured, and deeply supportive of their learning. The emphasis on practical, experience-based learning; through group discussions, interactive activities, and the sharing of diverse workplace and cultural perspectives, was consistently praised for helping participants connect concepts to their own environments,” he concluded.

“The Master Class has been an enriching experience- one that goes beyond theory and truly emphasises learning through practice and lived experience. What stood out most was how these insights were thoughtfully contextualised for mid-level professionals, who are often at a pivotal stage in their careers. Strengthening this cohort is critical, as it directly influences how effectively we contribute to the larger mission we are all part of,” said Nilesh Mishra from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics, who participated in the Master Class.

Another participant, Sarah Appiah, Senior Research Officer and Social Scientist at International Water Management Institute commented: “As an early career researcher, I arrived curious and left deeply enriched. The sessions went beyond theory, grounding us in the art of leading self, working with people, and shaping projects with intention and purpose. It was not just about management – it was about becoming.”
