Each year, the QLD Committee of the Crawford Fund for Food Security (CFFS) offers a small number of International Engagement Awards (up to $15,000 each).
These awards enable Queensland scientists to offer mentoring and training to scientists in developing countries in our region who are working on similar aspects of food and nutrition security.
An overview of the awards, the selection criteria, and the application form can be downloaded here.
“The Committee is pleased to support training and mentoring in industries of significance to both Queensland and neighbouring countries which build capacity, knowledge sharing and vital networks across the region,” said Professor Bob Lawn, Honorary Coordinator of the Queensland Committee.
“In recent years the committee has supported a diverse range of projects across countries including Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Samoa, and across commodities such as fisheries, sugarcane, forestry, mungbeans and mangoes,” he said.

Applications for the 2026 awards close on 27 February 2026.
Here is a report on the International Engagement Award received by Dr Millicent Smith, Senior Lecturer in Crop Physiology at the University of Queensland.
The Award supported a three-day capacity building workshop for mungbean breeders, conducted at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) campus in Hyderabad, India. This training initiative was designed to address knowledge gaps in breeding technologies and methodologies among researchers participating in the International Mungbean Improvement Network (IMIN) Phase 2 project.
The workshop brought together international participants from six developing countries representing key mungbean-producing regions.
Congratulations to our 2025 Crawford-in-Queensland International Engagement Award Winners!
